The Titan Metalquip Duplex Mill Series is a range of heavy-duty double-sided milling machines built for high volume squaring, facing and roughing. Twin opposed spindles machine both faces of a block or plate simultaneously, and an indexing rotary table takes the part through four sides from a single setup. Available in four series to suit workpieces from compact blocks through to large mould bases and heavy plate. Feature Summary

The Titan Metalquip Duplex Mill Series is a range of Taiwanese-built double-sided milling machines available exclusively through QMT Machinery in Australia. Four series cover a practical span of workpiece sizes and feature levels, from the core DS series through to the six sided DS6 and the heavy-duty SA.

Design and Construction

Every machine is built on a rigid one-piece cast iron base. Mass and rigidity where the cutting happens is what allows heavy depths of cut without chatter, and what holds accuracy over the working life of the machine. All guideways are Turcite-B coated and precision scraped. Z axis runs on precision linear guides or scraped V and flat guideway depending on model. Half of the Z axis ballscrew sits in lubrication oil.

Performance

Twin horizontal spindles carry large diameter face mills and engage opposite faces of the workpiece simultaneously. The spindles produce high torque at low RPM, which is what large cutters need to remove serious volumes of steel and cast iron. Because the two heads cut against each other, the forces cancel rather than pushing the part off datum. That is what lets a duplex mill take a heavy cut and still hold parallelism and squareness. Spindles are NT50 or NT60 equivalent depending on model. Powerful hydraulic vertical clamping holds the part through the cut, and multiple plates can be clamped and milled together for batch work.

Freeing Up Capacity Elsewhere

Roughing is the slowest and hardest work in the shop, and it is usually done on the wrong machine. Running it through a 5 axis machining centre or an EDM ties up an expensive asset doing low value work, and loads spindles, ways and ballscrews with forces those machines were not designed to absorb every day. A duplex mill takes that work off them. Blanks arrive at the finishing machine already square, parallel and to size. Finishing machines finish. Cycle times drop, lead times shorten, and wear is concentrated on the machine built to handle it.

Application Flexibility Through Custom Fixturing

The standard machine squares and faces blocks and plates. With purpose-built jigs and fixtures it does considerably more. Fixtures can be designed to hold irregular castings, weldments, multiple small parts in a single clamping, or components that would otherwise need dedicated tooling elsewhere. Because the machine is rigid, the clamping is hydraulic and the table indexes, almost any part that needs opposed faces machined can be fixtured for it. QMT works with customers and with fixture suppliers to design and build application-specific workholding, so one duplex mill can cover a far wider range of work than its base configuration suggests.

Usability

An operator-friendly HMI control handles setup and operation without CNC programming expertise. The DS6 series adds automatic workpiece sensing, measurement and detection, so the machine locates the part, measures it and machines all faces without the operator intervening between sides.

Reliability and Maintainability

The one-piece base design has no bolted joints to loosen or shift over time. Turcite-B coated and precision scraped guideways wear slowly and can be re-scraped rather than replaced. Hydraulic clamping components and spindle assemblies are supported through QMT’s Australian parts and service network, with installation, commissioning, operator training and ongoing service handled locally.
