FSML Series

The Morton FSML Series is built for workshops that need a dependable manual lathe with the mass, rigidity and accuracy normally seen in premium machine ranges. Unlike lighter-duty alternatives in the 14–16″ swing class, the FSML uses a 280mm-wide bed, induction-hardened and precision-ground ways, and a wide saddle footprint to maintain alignment and absorb cutting forces effectively.

Inside the headstock, the FSML separates itself from many competing models by using Japanese-steel gears and three dual-roller bearings to support the spindle. This combination provides smooth rotation, predictable thermal behaviour and long-term accuracy, particularly important during extended turning or threading work. The 58mm (2″) spindle bore offers strong capacity for bar work, making the machine suitable for general jobbing, repair work and training.

A major operational advantage is the universal quick-change gearbox, allowing fast selection of metric, inch, DP and module threads without swapping gears. For many users, this cuts setup time significantly compared with older Colchester-style machines that require manual gear changes for non-standard pitches.

Safety and usability details also set the FSML apart. A fully enclosed handwheel, interlocked chuck guard, fixed leadscrew cover, and clear control panel support cleaner, safer operation. The front chip tray, sliding guards and headstock sight glass help operators manage day-to-day maintenance more efficiently.

The FSML Series is available with a traditional 16-speed or an optional frequency-drive variable speed gearbox, which adds smoother speed transitions and low-speed torque, an advantage over older variable-speed systems found on most other brands. All models include a 7.5HP main motor, coolant system, steady and follow rests, and a 4-way toolpost as standard.

Where workshops require more capability, optional upgrades such as a quick-change toolpost, taper attachment, DRO, collet systems, and full splash guards extend the lathe’s versatility.
